The capital markets will play a key role in the post-Covid economic recovery strategy by encouraging and facilitating access to growth finance, a senior official said yesterday.

Wyckliffe Shamiah, Capital Markets Authority (CMA) chief executive said that access to long-term capital would be crucial in supporting various government programmes including the Big Four agenda.

“Our strategy has been refined with the onset of Covid-19, where technology-driven initiatives have emerged as key delivery channels for financial literacy,” he said.

Shamiah made the remarks while announcing dates for this year’s World Investor Week 2020 which is set to take place between October 5 and 11.

Annual event

This is an annual event where capital markets regulators and related institutions seek to raise awareness about the importance of investor education and protection.

Shamiah said the initiative will boost the authority’s investor awareness strategy, which has seen CMA reach over 500,000 people both locally and globally by leveraging technology and edutainment activities as well as new and traditional media to reach all players.

The fourth edition of the week-long campaign is an initiative of International Organisation of Securities Commissions, global standard setting body of capital markets regulators.

Shamiah said during the event, CMA will leverage technology and conduct social media campaigns on investor protection and capital market products and collaborate with market intermediaries to deepen awareness.
