Align Kenya’s leather industry with global market trends, experts say
By Faith Macharia, August 16, 2024Kenya must align its leather industry with global market trends to thrive in international markets, experts have said. Speaking during the COMESA Regional Leather Value Chain Strategy Validation workshop in Nairobi, representatives from member states highlighted the rising demand for eco-friendly products, stressing the importance of adopting green technology and sustainable practices in the leather sector.
Nobby Macharia, Kenya’s Industrialisation Secretary, underscored the strategic plan’s importance in driving industrial growth. The leather industry in Kenya has experienced fluctuating performance in recent years. According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the country imported leather and leather products worth Sh5.7 billion last year alone.
This high level of imports reflects the challenges facing the local industry, such as inadequate infrastructure and limited access to modern technology, which have hindered its competitiveness.
“The strategic plan we validate here will serve as a roadmap for transforming our industry, enhancing its global competitiveness, and creating sustainable jobs for our people,” Macharia said. The strategic plan validated at the workshop is seen as a critical step toward addressing these challenges and unlocking the full potential of the leather sector. By aligning with global market trends and adopting sustainable practices, Kenya and the broader COMESA region can position themselves as key players in the international leather market, driving economic growth and creating jobs for millions.
However, the sector faces numerous challenges, including inadequate infrastructure, limited access to modern technology, and a lack of skilled labour. These issues have prevented the region from fully capitalizing on its resources and competing effectively in the global market.
The workshop brought together participants from across the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) region, including industry leaders, and key stakeholders, all eager to contribute to the future of Africa’s leather industry.
