A master’s degree holder who rides boda boda for a living

By , September 23, 2019

Netizens have shown empathy for a master’s degree graduate who rides boda boda to make ends meet.

Hilary Kiplagat’s plight was posted on social media by eliciting mixed reactions where some felt that at least he had a job.

The man is pictured outside a thatched house standing beside his boda boda and displaying a certificate. The certificate bears a University of Nairobi (UoN) emblem.

Though PD Online could not independently verify the validity of the certificates, people known to Hilary described him as a hardworking man who showed a lot of dedication to his studies.

While some people wished Kiplagat good luck in his job hunt, others felt that at least he had a job.

As unemployment glooms in Kenya, top brains are dedicating themselves to the informal sector as they await for ‘greener pastures’.

Amidst the high unemployment rates, youths are turning to boda boda riding. Formalization of boda bodas through digital taxis and online couriers seems to be cleansing the sector that is manned by chaos and irresponsible riding.

This month, the National Transport Safety Authority (NTSA) released a report showing a 27% yearly increase in deaths from boda bodas.

With new entrants into the boda boda sector who are holders of degree certificates, the industry might begin having professionalism.
