As part of the drive to end attacks against women, crusaders for women rights in Murang’a county have intensified the campaign this time engaging the boda boda operators in the area.
Golden Women Empowerment and Support Group has been doing a series of meetings with the boda boda riders who have sometimes found themselves implicated in violating the rights of women.
Mary Mwangi, the coordinator of the groups, said the awareness campaigns are geared toward making the riders champions to advocate for women rights.
“We have opted to engage the boda boda riders to sensitise them on the importance of protecting the women in the society because some of them have been culprits,” said Mwangi, arguing that they intend to flip the coin and make them society’s eyes.
Peter Mwangi, the chairman of boda boda operators in Murang’a says use of drugs and alcohol has led to the increased cases of attacks on women.
“These women are our sisters, daughters and wives and we should strive to safeguard their rights and protect them,” said Mwangi.
