KCB RFC has turned its attention to the upcoming Fifteens rugby season, set to kick off in November, following their third-place overall finish in the 2024 National Sevens Circuit.
The Bankers, led by coach Andrew Amonde, accumulated 94 points after finishing ninth in the final leg of the circuit at the Prinsloo Sevens in Nakuru.
In the Challenger Cup final, KCB dominated Daystar Falcons with a convincing 38-0 win, securing their spot as the top team in that division.
Earlier, they had beaten Mombasa RFC 39-0 in the quarter-final and outclassed Catholic University (CUEA) 22-12 in the semifinal.
Despite the strong finish, Amonde acknowledged that the team’s performance over the circuit fell short of expectations, particularly given that they entered as the defending champions.
“We had to dig deep on the second day after not playing well on the first day. Big up to the boys who stepped up and showed the character we wanted them to show. So, it is just a matter of building the consistency in them and picking what we have learned here and taking it to the fifteens,” Amonde said after the event.
KCB’s circuit campaign was a roller-coaster, highlighted by their victory at the Kabeberi Sevens in Nairobi.
However, they faced challenges in other tournaments, falling 12-15 to Kenya Harlequin at the Driftwood Sevens and losing again to the same opponents 12-17 at the Kakamega Sevens.
They finished fifth at the Dala Sevens after a 31-0 win over Nondies and similarly placed fifth at the opening Christies leg, defeating MMUST 22-14.
Reflecting on the season, Amonde added, “Compared to last season, we didn’t perform as well.
