Why IEBC is yet to gazette winning candidates

By , August 23, 2022

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) says it will only gazette the newly elected leaders once it concludes pending elections for governor in Mombasa and Kakamega and four parliamentary constituencies.

IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati said IEBC will only do one gazette notice for all elected leaders once the elections are over.

The commission has set Monday next week as the new date for the postponed elections in the two counties as well as in Kitui Rural, Kacheliba, Pokot South and Rongai constituencies.

In the wards, the elections will be held in Nyaki West (North Imenti Constituency – Meru County), and Kwa Njenga (Embakasi South Constituency – Nairobi County).

Article 126 (2) of the Constitution provides that whenever a new House is elected, the President, by notice in the Gazette, shall appoint the place and date for the first sitting of the new House, which shall not be more than 30 days after the election.

“The commission cannot compute the votes garnered by political parties to enable us to work on the party list. We must conclude the elections,” said Chebukati.

He went on: “All the commissioners want to conclude these elections.”

Newly elected MPs will convene on Thursday for a two-day orientation session.

National Assembly acting Clerk Serah Kioko has summoned the lawmakers to agree on some housekeeping matters before they formally start  sittings.
