Professionals discard suits, corner office to vie for MCA positions
Member of County Assembly (MCA) seats in Kakamega County have attracted a high number of professionals and high-ranking personalities.
Some of them told the People Daily they had decided to vie for the seats due to funds expected to be allocated to the wards.
Kevin Muhanji, a youthful civil engineer and contractor, said he decided to vie for the Isukha South Ward seat in Shinyalu Constituency, so as to extend service to the residents.
“I am not in this race for the salary because I am already doing very well at a personal level. I want to become MCA with the sole objective of transforming the lives of my people,” he said.
Heleminah L’lanziva, a long-serving high school principal, is seeking a second term in Isukha North.
She said she was out to retain the seat “due to pressure from her constituents”.
“I have served my people well and they are not ready to let me go,” she claimed.
Julius Murunga is a General Manager in a group of hotels established across the country and is eyeing the Idakho North seat in Ikolomani.
He said he was a man of means but got attracted to the seat due to his desire to ‘serve his people’.
“I am not interested in the money paid to an MCA because I already earn far much beyond that. I decided to seek this position to give back to my people,” he said.
Rosylida Andambi, a former air hostess with Pan-Am Airlines and a renowned elections observer with the African Union, is also vying for the same seat.
She said she had decided to vie for the position instead of the other bigger ones like MP due to “pressure from her people”. The contestant has mounted a well-oiled campaign akin to a governor candidate.
Former Nominated Senator Godliver Omondi is out to retain her Kholera Ward seat in Matungu. She served in the Senate between 2013 and 2017 before she opted for the ward seat.
Gildon Shioso, an economist, is in the race for the Butsotso South seat in Lurambi. So is Dickson Murila, a retired senior educationist, in Isukha South in Shinyalu. Silas Shiyenzi, a youthful businessman in Kakamega county, has been cleared to vie for the Isukha West seat in Shinyalu.
