Kitui: Big loss for women as only 1 female MCA is elected
The incoming Kitui County Assembly has only one elected female Member of County Assembly (MCA) compared to the last House which had 5 elected women.
39 out of 40 wards that make up Kitui county elected male MCAs. Judith Wanza of Nuu ward is the only female candidate who was elected in Kitui. She was vying for the seat as an independent Candidate.
“I am grateful for the Nuu ward people trusting me to lead them and I am going to ensure I deliver to them,” Wanza said.
Wanza managed to floor 11 men who were competing for the member of the County Assembly for Nuu ward.
Constitutionally, each assembly should have one-third comprised of women. Kitui assembly will now be required to balance the members by nominating more women to the House. In the last House, Kitui had 5 elected and 12 nominated women.
This comes after Machakos and Nakuru counties surprised the country by electing women in all top positions.
Meanwhile, only four members of the Kitui County Assembly from the previous House have managed to be re-elected. Alex Nganga of Miambani ward, Sylvester Munyalo of Matinyani ward, David Masaku of Mutomo ward and Stephen Ileve Katana of Nguutani ward.
Wiper party managed to have 14 MCAs elected, 9 were elected as independent Candidates, NARC has 8 elected MCAs, UDA 4, Jubilee 2, Muungano 1 and GTAP 1.
In Kyome Thaana ward, the election of the Member of the County Assembly didn’t take place after one of the aspirants died in a road accident in June shortly after being cleared by IEBC to vie for the seat.
