IEBC clears Raila to run for president

Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya coalition party presidential flagbearer Raila Odinga has been cleared by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to contest for presidency in the August polls.

Odinga, accompanied by running mate Martha Karua and other leaders allied to the Azimio coalition party presented his papers to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati at the Bomas of Kenya.

“To Martha Wangari, the documentations are in order, and I approve of the nomination of Raila Odinga as a presidential candidate for the elections slated for August 9, 2022,” Chebukati stated.

The former premier will now face his main challenger, Deputy President William Ruto, who was cleared by the electoral body on June 5.

Odinga is the fifth presidential candidate to be cleared by the commission. Other presidential candidates cleared so far are Roots party leader George Wajackoyah, Mr. David Mwaura Waihiga of Agano party, and Mr. Walter Mong’are of Umoja Summit party.
