‘Wewe chief kama unataka kuambia mtu pahali atapiga kura, kwenda ambia bibi yako’ – Gachagua

By , July 23, 2022

Kenya Kwanza presidential running mate Rigathi Gachagua now says chiefs should not be allowed to guide the electorate on who to vote for during elections.

Speaking during a rally in Kitengela, the Mathira Member of Parliament (MP) noted that the administrators should only advise their wives who to vote for.

He added that the work of a chief is to settle land disputes, assist in the application of identity cards, and resolve marital conflicts.

“Wewe chief kama unataka kuambia mtu pahali atapiga kura, kwenda ambia bibi yako. Chief kazi yako ni kutengeza mambo ya mpaka, kuandika barua ya kitambulisho na kama bibi ya mtu ametoroka, mtafutie huyo bibi umrudishie. Si hiyo ndio kazi ya chief,” the lawmaker stated.

This loosely translates to:

“As a chief, if you want to instruct someone on who to vote for, go and tell your wife. You work as a chief is to settle issues of land disputes, assist in the application of identity cards, and look for people’s wives if they ran away from home, that is the work of a chief,”

Gachagua asks chiefs to reject attempts by state to use them

Gachagua’s sentiments come barely a day after he asked chiefs to reject attempts by state operatives to use them to mobilize voters for the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition.

The outspoken legislator who was speaking during campaign rallies in Kirinyaga further asked voters to reject any attempt to coerce them into voting for leaders allied to the Azimio coalition as well as the coalition’s presidential flag bearer.
