Running mate debate: Gachagua, Martha paired against each other

Azimio’s Martha Karua, Kenya Kwanza’s Rigathi Gachagua, Agano’s Ruth Mutua and Justin Wamae of Roots Party will on Tuesday, July 19, faceoff in a Deputy Presidential debate at the Catholic University for Eastern Africa (CUEA) in Karen, Nairobi, from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
The Presidential Debates Secretariat, in a communiqué, stated that the event will proceed in two tiers akin to the format used in the Nairobi gubernatorial debate.
The format will see Rigathi Gachagua and Martha Karua face off in the second tier as Justin Mae and Ruth Mutua battle it out in the first-tier debate.
“The first tier will feature Deputy Presidential candidates whose popularity ratings, based on three recent opinion polls, stand below 5%, while the second tier will involve candidates who have polled above 5% in the same opinion survey,” the statement read in part.

Moderators of the Deputy Presidential debate
The first tier, which will be moderated by Linda Alela of TV47 and Jacob Kioria of KBC, will run from 6:00 pm and end at 7:30 pm.
The second tier, which will be under the stewardship of KTN’s Sophia Wanuna and NTV’s James Smart, will air at 8:00 pm and end at 9:30 pm.
Further, Trevor Ombija of Citizen TV will moderate panel discussions on matters arising from the two-tier conversation.
“The moderators have been selected based on rigorous criteria that, among other things, endear the principles of impartiality, fairness, and objectivity, a strong understanding of the Kenyan political landscape and the major issues of this election,” the presidential debates secretariat head, Clifford Machoka said.
The event will be broadcast and streamed by all media houses in Kenya.
