Kandara Member of Parliament (MP) Alice Wahome has said she is the best candidate to be picked as the running mate for United Democratic Alliance (UDA) presidential candidate William Ruto.

Wahome said despite the fact that there are several people who have been touted for the same job, she is the best female candidate as she is a seasoned politician.

Speaking in her backyard in Kandara during a tree planting exercise, the MP insisted that Ruto’s running mate will come from the Mount Kenya region where he enjoys massive support.

“I know there are several of us who are eying this position but I feel I am best suited to take it because I am a woman and this will help strike a balance in leadership.

“Other regions might want to get this position but for now Mount Kenya should be given the priority,” she said.

Wahome says she qualifies as a woman

She said as the country strives to achieve gender balance in leadership, more women should be given more opportunities in government, adding that the few who are in various positions have showcased their ability to lead.

“I think it’s high time the country thinks of fully embracing women leadership because even if we don’t have a female president this time, we might have one soon,” she remarked.

Wahome, however, said if she does not get the position, she will defend her parliamentary seat saying she has a lot of unfinished work which she would like to complete.

“You don’t throw away the baby with the bathing water and if I don’t get the running mate position I will continue serving the people of Kandara,” the MP said.

She also said the UDA brigade will continue campaigning for Ruto in his presidential bid, drumming up support for the bottom-up agenda which she said shall lead to economic growth of the country.

“I am very confident that Ruto shall carry the day on the August poll and he shall be the next president of this country,” she said.

Other candidates from the Mount Kenya region who have been touted for the running mate position include; Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi, former leader of majority in the Senate Kithure Kindiki, Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua and his Kiharu counterpart Ndindi Nyoro.
