Here is what you need to know to get up to speed with today’s happenings.

Date with destiny awaits CS nominees

Parliament will today begin vetting some of the nominees of President William Ruto’s proposed broad-based government.

Former Interior and National Coordination Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki will be the first to appear before the Parliament Committee on Appointments.

The former CS will be expected to defend his nomination as minister of the Interior and National Administration before the Committee in the National Assembly.

Other CS nominees who will be vetted on the first day include the Health Cabinet Secretary nominee Debra Mlongo Barasa, Alice Wahome (Lands, Public Works, Housing and Urban Development), Julius Migos Ogamba (Education) and Rosalinda Soipan Tuya (Defence).

Reactions to UDA party chaos

Reactions are expected to pour in following a violent standoff which occured at the UDA party’s Ngong Road offices on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The chaos left the self-imposed Secretary-General Joe Khalende nursing serious head injuries after he was attacked by goons supporting the UDA secretary-general Cleophas Malalah.

Following the clashes, the party’s chairperson Cecily Mbarire announced that a National Executive Council meeting would be held on Friday, August 2, 2024, to bring back order.

Power outage

Kenya Power has announced a scheduled power outage set for Thursday, August 1, 2024, that will affect eight counties across Kenya.

Kenya Power said counties affected by this blackout include; Kiambu, Nakuru, Nyamira, Kisii, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Siaya and Mombasa counties.

The outage is planned for maintenance purposes, with different regions experiencing temporary power cuts throughout the day.

In a statement on its official website, Kenya Power said, “Notice is hereby given under Rule 27 of the Electric Power Rules that the electricity supply will be interrupted as follows: (Periodic interruptions are necessary to facilitate maintenance and upgrades of power lines, connect new customers, or replace power lines during construction, etc.).”
