Athletics Kenya (AK) officials have lauded the impressive performance of the World Athletics Under-20 Championships team in Lima, Peru.

With three gold medals, three silver medals and a bronze, they expressed confidence that the team will make a strong showing at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA.

Senior vice president Paul Mutwii, who led the delegation, highlighted the team’s discipline as a key factor in their success.

“This is my first time accompanying such a team to the World Under-20 Championships, and their discipline has been a major reason for their excellent performance,” remarked Mutwii, who was accompanied by Youth Committee chairman Barnaba Korir and Treasurer David Miano.

Despite the chilly weather in the Peruvian capital, Mutwii noted that it did not affect the athletes.

“I want to assure Kenyans that, with the way we are working with them, the future is promising. This will set the stage for a strong team at the Tokyo World Championships and the 2028 Olympics.”

Similarly, Korir praised the athletes’ performance and expressed national pride.

“With the increasing competition in athletics, we are very happy with their performance. The evolving dynamics of sports are a learning experience for us all. The results of our youth camps over the past four years are evident, and we thank the government for supporting the Athletics Kenya youth program,” Korir conveyed.

He added that they will support the athletes in their transition to senior levels.

“What they have accomplished is commendable, and we must appreciate their efforts. We aim to ensure a successful transition to senior competition.”

Korir also confirmed that all allowances for athletes and officials have been paid.

“With all allowances settled, we must thank the government, the Ministry of Sports, and the Sports Fund for their excellent support. The athletes have received their payments,” he concluded.
