Saboti Member of Parliament (MP) Caleb Amisi has opposed a proposal by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga on the composition of the new cabinet.

Amisi has strongly rejected Governor Kahiga’s proposal to have eight cabinet secretaries picked from the Mount Kenya region.

In a statement on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, the vocal lawmaker accused the governor of advancing the tribalism agenda in his proposal to President William Ruto to pick eight Cabinet Secretaries from the central Kenya region.

Amisi further argued that the dismissed cabinet had a few members from the Mount Kenya region but failed to meet the expectations of Kenyans and help Ruto deliver on his campaign promises.

According to the Saboti MP, tribalism is one of the issues currently bedevilling the country. The MP thus challenged President Ruto to pick a cabinet of national unity.

“Dear Governor Kahiga, we don’t want a tribalised cabinet. You had eight CSs from central, but still, Kenya went down. Stop tribalism, it is one of the malady-eating Kenya!” Amisi stated.

Governor Kahiga proposal

In an interview with Kameme FM on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, Governor Kahiga implored President Ruto to recognise the support he received from the region while constituting his new cabinet.

He added that the outgoing CSs received their appointments following a post-election deal which was struck between Ruto and his Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Failure to pick eight cabinet secretaries from Mt Kenya region, Governor Kahiga noted that the President will have violated a pact with his deputy.

“I want to remind the president that Mt Kenya gave him at least 3.5 million votes in the last elections and we had eight seats with Mt Kenya representatives…from the likes of Justin Muturi, Alice Wahome, Moses Kuria and the rest. Ruto needs to understand that all those seats that were held by Mt Kenya representatives were done through an agreement they had with his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua.

“If he is listening to me, I want to remind Ruto that those seats belonged to us…and if he minds the people of Mt Kenya he should listen. In my opinion, I would warn him that picking anyone from another region will be a start to his downfall,” Kahiga remarked.

Ruto’s pledge

Despite different opinions, President William Ruto vowed to form a government of national unity. He called on the church to pray for him to get professional cabinet secretaries who would help him deliver on his mandate.
