Kileleshwa Member of County Assembly (MCA) Robert Alai has slammed current senators and Members of Parliament who have ambitions of becoming governors in the near future.
Taking to his official X account on Sunday, August 25, 2024, the politician-cum blogger stated that the senators and MPs eyeing gubernatorial seats are the ones opposed to the idea of county chiefs getting impeached.
Alai on Kawira’s impeachment
Alai in his statement argued that the politicians that are currently criticising the recent impeachment of Meru governor Kawira Mwangaza have failed to provide evidence in support of their claims of failed due process in impeaching Kawira.
According to Alai, Meru county people whom he says are tired of the misrule of Kawira, played huge role in her impeachment.
“Senators and MPs with ambitions of being governors don’t like the idea of governors being impeached. I have seen some arguments here and in the media by sitting MPs and Senators.
“The arguments supporting Kawira Mwangaza doesn’t go beyond the shallow claims of “male chauvinism” and “due process.”There are no evidence to support their claims but the two tropes are easier to use against the MCAs are Meru people tired of the misrule of Governor Kawira,” Alai stated.

Reactions to Kawira’s impeachment
Alai’s claims come moments after Narok County Senator Ledama Olekina opinionated in an article published in one of the local dailies, that the impeachment of governor Kawira had the blessings of President William Ruto.
“Plotters of Governor Mwangaza’s downfall took no prisoners. They dressed up their case against her as revolving around gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct and abuse of office but in truth, it was a naked power grab steeped in male ego carried out with the blessings of the House on the Hill,” an excerpt from Ledama’s article reads.
Ledama further, took to his official X account to encourage Kenyans to have a read of his article.

Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma supported Ledama’s opinion, and called for an increase of female governors from the current seven, to 16.
Kaluma argued that governor Kawira must stay for chauvinists to fall.
“We MUST increase the number of female Governors from 7 to 16: It’s G7 to G16 NOT G7 to G6! For chauvinists to fall, Governor Kawira MUST stay!” Kaluma wrote on X.

The Senate on Tuesday, August 20, 2024, upheld governor Kawira’s impeachment in a night proceeding during which 26 senators allied to the Kenya-Kwanza government voted to have her removed from office.
14 senators allied to Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition abstained while 4 senators voted no. The law requires just 24 senators to uphold the impeachment of a governor.
However, governor Kawira earned a reprieve after the High Court suspended the Senate’s decision to impeach her.
