Farmers, workers of Nzoia Sugar block MD Makokha from accessing office, sight unpaid dues
Workers of Nzoia Sugar Company blocked suspended Managing Director CPA Wanjala Makokha from from accesing his office after the court granted him a court order to resume duty.
This incident comes barely a week after the Ministry of Agriculture through CS Peter Munya appointed Dr. Chrispine Omond as acting MD during Wanjala’s three month suspension.
Through Ben Wanyonyi, the chair of Nzioa Workers Union, the workers claimed they will not allow Makokha back at Nzoia premises, adding that he should respect his boss, CS Ministry of Agriculture who suspended him.
“We are not going to allow Mokokha at this Company again, he is the reason why farmers are suffering. We have not been paid for months, others for years yet he’s running to the courts to come here with court orders, he will not step in this company even with police,” Ben Wanyonyi said.
Makokha applied for orders prohibiting his suspension at the Employment and Labor relations Court in Nairobi through his Lawyer Brian Khaemba, a request that was granted by the court.
“It’s barely two weeks since the new MD came to office and we are seeing a lot of changes, we will not go back to where we were. we say no to CPA Wanjala Makokha,” Mary Nekesa, said.
The famers blocked the Nzoia-Bukembe road for hours, inspecting each vehicle that passed the road. At one point a van that was suspected to be ferrying the MD and police to the company, was pelted with stones by the angry farmers as the driver reversed and retreated with speed
