The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ordered Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to pay former Harambee Stars coach Adel Amrouche Sh108 million in costs and damages for wrongful dismissal.
Amrouche was dismissed by former FKF boss Sam Nyamweya in 2014 after a disappointing aggregate loss to Lesotho in a 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The 51-year-old Belgian tactician had only served a couple of months of his five-year contract, winning the 2013 Cecafa Senior Challenge Cup at Nyayo Stadium, before he was sacked.
He went on to sue FKF at Fifa and was awarded Sh60 million and that was still not enough for him as he proceeded to the CAS and lodged an appeal, asking for more money. FKF president Nick Mwendwa contested thaw appeal but lost.
CAS has also ordered FKF to pay Amrouche before the end of this month, and risk failing to be allowed to compete in the 2022 Fifa World Cup qualifiers in case of a default.
“I will ask Fifa to give us an extension. We are paying for the sins of the former office and I hope the government will help us pay Amrouche,” said Mwendwa.
Amrouche was appointed in 2013 and is best remembered for leading Kenya to a 1-1 draw against Nigeria in Calabar when Francis Kahata scored a brilliant free-kick before the hosts equalised in the dying minutes of the match.
Upon leaving Kenya, Amrouche coached Libya’s national team as well as Algerian clubs MC Alger and USM Alger, the latter knocked Gor Mahia from the CAF Champions League last weekend. Amrouche is now the coach of the Botswana national team.
