Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers yesterday arrested three suspects during a raid on food joints and recovered an estimated 3,000kg of bush meat in Nairobi.  

Other suspects are on the run after abandoning their stalls.   

In a statement, KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said selling bush meat is illegal, adding that the raid was aimed at protecting the public from consuming un-inspected meat. 

“This was a joint operation by the police, public health, Nairobi county inspectorate, veterinary department and administration,” he said.

Buying and selling bush meat is illegal in Kenya which attracts a jail term of not less than three years without an option of a fine. Most of the illegal meat costs Sh230 to Sh250 per kg, below the market rate of Sh400 per kg, KWS said.

“The meat is suspected to have been from zebras, giraffes and buffaloes,” said Udoto.

The public is warned against buying meat from suspicious outlets.
