Kiambu Members of Parliament have thanked President Uhuru Kenyatta for ‘fulfilling’ his administration’s legacy projects in the central region.

Led by Lari legislator Jonah Mburu, they termed commencement of the construction of the 540 kilometers Mau Mau road as a ‘dream come true’.

The mega road project which will traverse 4 counties namely Kiambu, Nyandarua, Murang’a and Nyeri and will cost the government Sh.30 billion translating to Sh. 55 millions per kilometer.

Mburu said that his constituency which has had no tarmac road will enjoy 105 kilometres of tarmacked roads starting from Gataka along the Limuru/ Lari boundary to Gitiha, Iria ini, Kagaa, Matimbei, Kamahindu, Kimende, and Gatamaiyu.

Other areas where the road will criss-cross in Lari are Nduriri, Kagongo and Nyanduma before entering Gatundu at Kariminu covering 227 kilometres.

The MP addressed the media at the Kiambu County Commissioner’s grounds after his Gatundu North and Githunguri counterparts Wanjiku Kibe and Gabriel Kago met with Kenya National Highway Authority (Kenha) officials led by Eng. Ezekiel Fukwo who is the Mau Mau road project coordinator.

The MP said the road will boost the economy of the areas which had lagged behind for decades in matters of development.

“Mt.Kenya region which grows coffee and tea as well general agriculture economy and trade will be significantly enhanced due to good interconnections,” said Mburu.

Mau Mau road seeks to honour Mau Mau freedom fighters who liberated Kenya from colonialists.

Kago said that the construction of the road will have social and economic benefits to residents of his area and the entire region.

“The road will pass through tens of market centers whose economic growth will obviously be spurred. Our youth will provide labour in the constructin too,” he said.

He said the road plus the revival of the Nairobi/Nanyuki railway line will open up the central region which has been asleep for decades due to what he termed as economic sabotage during the Kanu regime.

The MP said that they were directed by Uhuru to meet with the county commissioner Wilson Wanyanga and governor James Nyoro in order to ensure a smooth rollout of construction works.
Gatundu North MP urged those who have encroached the road’s reserve to move out in order for construction works to go on without undue interuptions.
‘The road will be beneficial to all of us and I beseech those who might be settled on it’s way to leave voluntarily,’ she said.
She said that contractors are already on site and some had already started working adding that the government’s has promised to deliver the road by 2023.
Kenha’s Fukwo said that the project  which has a two years construction timeline will be undertaken by five contractors who are already on site.
