The push and pull between Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and the National government has escalated after the former yesterday threatened to sue some State officials at the International Criminal Court (ICC). 

Sonko accuses Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibiko, Nairobi Regional Commissioner Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo of abuse of human rights during the implementation of the dusk-to-dawn curfew aimed at taming the spread of coronavirus.

 He claims the three defied court orders which had barred them from destroying sanitiser booths he had installed in the city as part of the efforts to fight Covid-19 in the city.

The booths erected at various points in the city were vandalised  soon after they were put up. Sonko blamed Kibicho.

The embattled governor also faulted the ongoing demolitions at Kariobangi Sewage estate and other informal settlements, claiming police officers under Kibicho, Njega and Ndolo  impounded “goods worth thousands of dollars including face masks meant for supply to the residents of informal settlements”.

“I’m 100% sure the President is not aware about this but I have been saying the people around my Boss are messing this country,” he wrote on his social media accounts.

“Let me study the Rome Statue and engage the local and international lawyers to deal with this issue, because this is a serious crime against humanity.

This is the right time PS Interior Karanja Kibicho, Nairobi RC Wilson Njega and Nairobi Regional Police Commander Philip Ndolo must be taken to ICC,” 

The governor, who interestingly in 2012 travelled to The Hague to protest the prosecution of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto over alleged crimes against humanity, shared what he claimed was a draft of his suit against the three.

The governor has been on a warpath with some State officials since he signed a deal handing over some City Hall functions to the National government.
