‘Please accept our deepest sympathies’- Ruto’s message to Americans after wildfires rage in Los Angeles
President William Ruto on Sunday, January 12, 2025, sent a message of sympathy to hundreds of residents who have been affected by the raging wildfire in Los Angeles.
In a statement, the Head of State sent condolences to the people who had lost their lives and whose property had been destroyed following the devastating wildfires.
“The people of Kenya send their heartfelt condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and to all those who have suffered losses during the fires that have caused destruction and suffering in Los Angeles. Our thoughts and prayers are with them, and with all the people of the United States of America as they rally to the aid of their compatriots,” Ruto’s statement read in part.
Review of climate policies
While extending his sympathise, Ruto called for an urgent review of climate policies to help tackle such extreme incidents. The Head of State called on the global leaders to rise and give the climate change issue the urgency it deserves.
“As your friends, we have received the news of these devastating fires with deep concern and empathy. We recognise that, due to climate change, extreme climatic phenomena may evolve into a new normal unless radical measures are undertaken in the spirit of global solidarity,” Ruto explained.
While calling for the adoption of more measures to address climate change, Ruto expressed optimism that Americans would rise above the effects caused by the wildfire.
He assured them that Kenyans were fully behind them as they figured out their recovery journey.
“At the same time, we trust that the indomitable spirit of the American people, anchored in the powerful values that we share, will inspire them with the resilience and determination to recover from the tragedy and emerge even stronger in days to come.
“The people of Kenya stand in solidarity with the citizens of Los Angeles and all Americans. Please accept our deepest sympathies, and know that you have our support as you work towards recovery, healing, and rebuilding,” Ruto’s statement added.
Wildfire effects
According to authorities in California, six simultaneous blazes that have ripped across Los Angeles County neighbourhoods have killed at least 16 people and damaged homes, apartment buildings, businesses, and vehicles.
Despite the damage already caused, the authorities projected the fire to continue raging even as they tried to extinguish it.
The fire, the most destructive in the history of Los Angeles, has razed whole neighbourhoods to the ground, leaving just the smouldering ruins of what had been people’s homes and possessions.
Celebrities and US influential people are among those who are counting losses following the devastating effects of wildlife.
