Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Gachagua attacks
After the former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was attacked, reactions are expected to follow throughout the day.
The leaders, both aligned to the former Mathira Member of Parliament and those in the opposing sides, as well as Kenyans on social media, are expected to comment on the attacks that were witnessed in Limuru on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
The former DP was attending a burial ceremony before chaos rocked the event, forcing him to run for his safety.
In the event, Gachagua was in the company of leaders who, after the incident, went to file a report with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Kiambu County Senator Karung’o Thangwa and his Nyandarua counterpart John Methu were among the leaders present.
Some of the leaders have already made their stance known, including Narc Kenya chief Martha Karua.
“The barbaric attack on Rigathi members of parliament and mourners in Limuru today is unacceptable and should not occur in a civilized society.
“This coming after the withdrawal of his security must be wholly blamed on the Ruto regime . Like all citizens, he deserves to be free and secure at all times,” Karua posted on X.
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, however, blamed the former DP for the chaos that rocked the Limuru ceremony.
“I strongly condemn any form of violence, especially during funerals, which should be moments of respect and unity. However, the incident involving former Deputy President @rigathi appears to have been stage-managed to gain public sympathy.
“During his time in office, Gachagua was often criticized for using tribal rhetoric that fueled division rather than fostering national cohesion. As a former leader, he should strive to promote unity and reconciliation, ensuring his actions and words reflect the responsibility of someone who once held high office, rather than engaging in tactics that risk further polarizing the nation.
“Hii ni mchezo ya town,” the lawmaker said in a statement on X on Thursday night.
People Daily goes green
People Daily makes history as Kenya’s first fully digital newspaper, and on Friday, it sets a groundbreaking precedent by transitioning fully to digital — a first for a major newspaper not only in Kenya but across Africa.
“As a digital journalism enthusiast, I see this transition as more than just bold — it’s an exciting yet challenging leap for traditional journalists who may worry about their roles or question the value of their craft in a digital era. However, this shift has the potential to unlock new opportunities and redefine the landscape of journalism,” Chrisphine Magak, Digital Editorial Content Lead at Mediamax Network Ltd., argued.
