The murder of the Wells Fargo HR Director, Willis Ayieko, was a case of robbery gone wrong, according to a preliminary report following the interrogation of the main suspects.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has said that one of the suspects, Robert Wakolo Okoth, who was shot dead, hit Ayieko’s head against the wall as he forced him to reveal the details of his bank account and mobile money PIN.
DCI says Wakolo is a trained boxer and has been linked to a number of robberies and murders in the region.
“The injuries turned deadly as he bled internally forcing Wakolo and his accomplices to devise ways of disposing of the body,” the DCI preliminary report states.
Wakolo called his brother who was in Kisumu and asked him to come to the scene for a mission. The brother, Victor Ouma Okoth, is among those set to take murder and robbery with violence charges.
Tortured
A total of seven suspects were linked to the incident, which occurred between October 18 and 23 in Siaya. However, two of them were shot and killed as police hunt down the gang also linked to other incidents in the area.
A 52-year-old man who helped in the disposal of the body was on Tuesday last week arrested during a police operation in Kakamega. He is said to have helped in the disposal of Ayieko’s body in Mungowere stream on October 23.
Ayieko had gone missing on October 18 after attending a funeral in Gem, Siaya county and was later found dead.
Last Friday, a suspect in whose house Ayieko is believed to have been murdered was detained for 30 days pending police probe. Siaya magistrate Benjamin Limo ruled that Duncan Onyango alias ‘Otuch’ be detained pending investigations. It is alleged that Ayieko was held and tortured in his house in Luanda Doho village, Kakamega County and police believe he has crucial information.
Ayieko’s vehicle was found abandoned at a petrol station in Sabatia, Vihiga county.
Another suspect Charles Otieno Odhiambo, 21, was last week arraigned before Siaya Magistrate Margaret Wamabani. Odhiambo, who is a boda boda rider, was arrested by police in Kisumu after he was linked to the suspects and the prosecution was also granted 30 days.
