Githunguri Constituency Member of Parliament (MP) Gathoni Wamuchomba has revealed that she is embarrassed to be associated with the thirteenth parliament because of how the House runs its business.

Speaking during a live radio interview on Friday, November 15, 2024, the vocal MP said that the current parliament hurriedly passes laws without proper reflection and analysis.

According to Wamuchomba, some of the laws passed and activities going on in the parliament are hazardous to the livelihood of the citizenry and the parliamentarians look like they no longer care.

Questioning how the house runs its business, Wamuchomba expressed concern about how MPs make laws and affirmations and later complained that it is no longer functional.

“I am one of the members of parliament who are very embarrassed to be associated with the thirteenth parliament because the things that we are doing in the parliament are hazardous to the livelihood of the Kenyan people and we look like we no longer care.

“I don’t understand how you make a law and give affirmation then you are the same person who is complaining that this is not functional or it is not working,” MP Wamuchomba said.

Wamuchomba on SHIF

On the issue of the NHIF SHIF transition, Wamuchomba disclosed that she wrote a letter to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula so that he could adjourn the house business and discuss the issues of accessing healthcare services because she received numerous distressed calls from her constituents who were unable to access services at various health facilities.

She noted that during the debate, every member who raised the issue of SHIF complained that their voters were not accessing health services that were previously catered for by NHIF in various county and referral hospitals.

Voicing her frustrations, she complained how after debating, instead of the house to find a resolution and make sure they are fully implemented they called a Kamukunji.

“I wrote a letter to the Speaker of the National Assembly on November 11 asking him to adjourn the business of the House so that we could debate the big issue of access to health the request was granted but unfortunately, we adjourned the business of the House we debated and every member who raised the issue of SHIF complained that their voters are not accessing health services at various county and referral hospitals.

“As a member of Githunguri, I will say that is true because I get distress calls when we were on recess that’s why I wrote a letter requesting for adjournment of the business of the house and the members decided to call for a kamukunji instead of finding a resolution and make sure they are implemented,” she complained.

In addition, Wumuchomba said that the government should not have rushed to implement the SHA act before sorting out the debts owed by NHIF and preparing Kenyans for migration.

“My question is why did we have to rush to implement SHA knowing very well that we had a lot of debts that were owed by NHIF why could we sort first our issues on NHIF first and prepare people for migration,” she added.
