National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has praised Democratic Party candidate Kamala Harris despite her loss to Donald Trump in the US presidential race.

Trump emerged the winner after what was tipped as a tight race, and despite the defeat, Wetang’ula said Harris represented herself with resilience and grace.

“Congratulations to the 47th United States of America President-elect Donald Trump on your success in the recent U.S. election.

“This election stands as a testament to the enduring strength of democracy and the importance of spirited competition in shaping the future.

“To Kamala Harris, my heartfelt congratulations as well. You have represented yourself with resilience and grace, breaking barriers and inspiring many, especially as a woman of colour in your first run.

“Your remarkable campaign has set a powerful example, and I encourage you to remain a prominent voice in politics. The journey continues, and there is much more to contribute in the years ahead,” Wetang’ula said in a statement on his X handle, posted on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

Wetang’ula is among the Kenyan leaders who have added their voice to the outcome of the US electoral results.

Nyoro’s take

“Congratulations, President Donald Trump, the 45th and 47th. Republican policies have always been better for Africa and the Global South.

“The global economy will definitely be better with imminent monetary easing under Trump. Hongera USA. We are African, and Africa is our business,” Nyoro said in a statement on X posted on Wednesday, November 6, 2024.

Trump’s speech

After his victory became clear, Trump appeared to address the Americans and asked them to help him heal the country.

“I will fight for you and your family and your future; every single day I will be fighting for you with every breath in my body.

“We overcame obstacles that no one thought possible. We’re going to help our country heal; we have a country that needs help, and it needs help very badly,” he said.
