Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thang’wa has voiced his continuous support for impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

In his statement shared via his official X account, the senator stated that he will relentlessly support the DP who was ousted at the Senate on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

He also noted that he will extend his support to the staff affected by the DP’s ouster.

“Let it be known-I voted no, no, no! I will always stand on the right side of history. I stand with Riggy G and his employees/staff,” he said.

Thangwa’s comments come shortly after 108 staff members at Gachagua’s office were sent on immediate compulsory leave.

According to an internal memo shared on Saturday, October 19, 2024, the affected workers are in job groups T and U.

“Following the ongoing Constitutional process affecting His Excellency the Deputy President, it has been decided as follows; All officers in Job Groups T and U are hereby instructed to proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect; II.

“All Heads of Departments are directed to ensure they designate in writing a responsible officer to be in-charge of their respective Departments with a copy to the Chief Of staff and the Principal Administrative Secretary,” the memo signed by the Principal Administrative Secretary Patrick Mwangi and copied to Head of Public Service and Chief of Staff Felix Koskei reads in parts.

Adding;

“All serving officers in Supernumerary Contracts shall also proceed on compulsory leave with immediate effect; IV. All Heads of Departments shall ensure conformity to these directives by 1200hrs on 19th October, 2024.”

Among those affected include Gachagua’s chief of staff, his private secretary, administrative secretaries and advisors.

Gachagua was impeached after the Senate found him guilty of five out of 11 counts against him on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

With the ouster, Gachagua has made history as the first deputy president to be impeached since the implementation of the 2010 Constitution.

The voting occurred even as he was in hospital ailing from severe chest pains.

Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki has been nominated by President William Ruto to succeed him.
