Reaction to Gachagua’s impeachment

Rigathi Gachagua ceased to be Kenya’s Deputy President after he was impeached by the Senate on Thursday, October 17, 2024.

The office of the Deputy President is now vacant, and eyes will be on President William Ruto to see who he will nominate for the position.

“Pursuant to Article 145(7) and 151(b)(ii) of the Constitution and Standing Order No. 78(8) of the Senate, the Senate has resolved to remove from office by impeachment Hon. Rigathi Gachagua, the Deputy President of Kenya. Accordingly, Hon. Rigathi Gachagua ceases to hold office,” Senate Speaker Amason Kingi read after five of the 11 grounds in the impeachment motion were approved by the Senators.

As eyes will be on Ruto and his possible choice to replace his first-ever DP, politicians allied to both the Head of State and Gachagua are set to issue statements and comment on the impeachment hearing outcome.

Kenyans, on various platforms, are also expected to voice their opinions on the topic that is set to dominate the headlines throughout the day.

Kenya started their U17 World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat to England at CFC Stadium in Santiago de los Caballeros on Friday, October 18, 2024.
