A coalition of women leaders in Mombasa has rallied behind Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, lobbying for her to be considered as Kenya’s next Deputy President should the Senate uphold the impeachment of Rigathi Gachagua.
Drawing attention to Waiguru’s extensive leadership experience, the women, under the banner of Sauti ya Wanawake, described her as the most qualified candidate for the role of deputy president.
Global recognition
They highlighted her tenure as Devolution Cabinet Secretary, two-term governor, and Chair of the Council of Governors (CoG) as evidence of her capability to serve in one of the highest offices in the land.
The group has urged President William Ruto to tap Waiguru as his deputy, emphasising that her qualifications, both locally and internationally, make her the perfect candidate for the role.
“Governor Waiguru is one of the most respected women leaders in this country today. Her leadership has been recognised beyond Kenya’s borders,” said Elizabeth Msigo, a leader from Maendeleo ya Wanawake’s Nyali Chapter, during a press briefing in Mombasa.
“She was honoured by former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf for her transformative leadership, being selected for the prestigious Amujae programme that empowers women to pursue leadership positions globally.”
Needed balance
Msigo expressed confidence in Waiguru’s ability to support President Ruto in tackling Kenya’s pressing challenges, particularly economic recovery.
“As women of Kenya, we are prepared to rally behind your administration if you appoint Waiguru as your deputy. It would also be a fulfilment of your promise to women,” Msigo added, underscoring the group’s resolve with the slogan, “Waiguru anatosha”—Waiguru is enough.
Echoing Msigo’s sentiments, Emaculate Atieno of Sauti ya Kina Mama Pwani stressed that Waiguru’s appointment would mark a significant milestone for gender equality in Kenya.
“Gender equality has made strides in the counties, but at the national level, it has yet to take root,” Atieno said. “This is a golden opportunity for the president to appoint a woman as Deputy President, motivating more women to step into leadership roles.”
Miriam Kimemia, another vocal supporter, pointed to Waiguru’s unblemished leadership record, saying her inclusion in the presidency would introduce the much-needed balance and sobriety in the country’s top leadership.
