Cabinet Secretary for Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Kipchumba Murkomen, on Monday, October 14, 2024, held a high-level meeting with the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Kenya, Neil Wigan.
Murkomen through a statement shared via his official X account revealed that the meeting was aimed at Kenya’s sports and creative industries.
Murkomen on sports technology
According to Murkomen, their discussions focused on fostering deeper economic and cultural ties between the two nations, particularly in the fields of sports technology and creative talent development.
The former Transport CS further stated that they had explored new areas of collaboration aimed at attracting more UK firms to invest in Kenya’s sports tech sector, in the meeting that was also joined by key figures from Kenya’s Ministry of Sports and heads of creative economy and entrepreneurship programs, alongside representatives from the British Council.
“Kenya and the United Kingdom enjoy long historical ties that span economic, social and cultural spheres. This morning, I held a meeting with the UK High Commissioner to Kenya H.E. Neil Wigan, OBE, alongside creative economy and entrepreneurship programs heads from our Ministry and their counterparts in the British Council in Kenya. We explored areas of partnerships geared towards attracting more UK firms to invest locally in sports technology and the development of talent,” Murkomen stated.
Additionally, the talks centered on establishing a creative exchange program between Kenya and the UK.
Boosting creatives’ employability
Murkomen says the initiative aims to boost the skills of Kenyan creatives by facilitating knowledge-sharing and practical learning experiences, to improve their employability, both locally and globally.
Moreover, he revealed that the UK government and Kenya’s Ministry of Sports already have a solid foundation in areas such as fashion, digital literacy, and performing arts.
“We also discussed the establishment of an exchange program between Kenya and UK creatives to enhance our capacity to develop content and boost the employability of our youth locally and globally. The UK government and our Ministry already have ongoing programs in the areas of fashion, digital literacy and the performing arts,” Murkomen revealed.
