Nyeri County on Saturday, October 5, 2024, recorded a low turnout for the public participation exercise for the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

A spot check in the six constituencies showed minimal activity as the exercise entered day two.

Those who attended the exercise signed the public views template forms as they headed out.

Residents who spoke to the press expressed that the government had misplaced priorities with the ongoing impeachment motion.

According to the residents, the government ought to have shifted focus to the ongoing crisis affecting the country such as the university funding model, and the universal health transition among others.

“Sisupport hii mjadala kwa sababu vile mi naona na nimeona mambo mingi, naona kuna kitu kinafichwa hapa, sasa kama Gachagua ataenda si ata mkubwa wake aende, sisi tunataka nchi ambayo inaongozwa vizuri. Kuna kitu inafichwa, hii mambo ya airport, masomo, mambo mingi lakini your first priority ni impeacgment, kama rais anataka nchi iende vizuri azungumze,” Christopher Njagu, a resident of Othaya said.

The North Rift region also witnessed low turnout and minimal activity in constituencies.

Residents who addressed the press noted that the day was not convenient for the exercise as majority of people had other commitments being a sabbath day.

“Such an exercise should be held on a working day and not Saturday when people have other social engagements and it is also a sabbath day for Adventists who can not engage in other activities other than church,” Paul Kimely a resident said.
