Former Laikipia County MP Cate Waruguru has dared Members of Parliament against attempting to proceed with an impeachment motion against embattled Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua next week.

In a statement, Waruguru, a staunch ally of the Deputy President, said the MPs knew exactly where impeachment proceedings should be carried out and that prosecuting the matter on social media was improper.

“Our Parliamentarians should shun and desist from online threats and theatrics. Impeachment shouldn’t be prosecuted on social media but rather at the designated chambers,” Waruguru noted.

She also challenged the members of parliament to disclose the grounds for the planned impeachment which is said to be planned for tabling in the House on October 1, 2024.

“As it stands the signature photos and theatrics should be treated as hot air,” Waruguru charged.

Barasa to table motion

This comes after Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa claimed that he would table the motion on the floor of the House after presenting the more than 240 signatures he says he has managed to collect from MPs.

This exceeds the threshold of 177 signatures required to pass such a motion for approval by the Speaker of the National Assembly. Also, going by the numbers it would take the nod of just 233 Members of Parliament to approve the impeachment of Gachagua.

On his part, Gachagua has dared the MPs to proceed with his planned ouster, telling President Ruto that voters from the Mountain could forgive but would never forget.

“As a people, we were there before, we are here today and we will be there tomorrow,” Gachagua said during the funeral ceremony of the school kids who perished in a night fire at the Endarasha school in Kieni.

Gachagua allies

Also, the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (ODPP) on Friday, September 27, 2024, recommended the charging of politicians and an aide closer to Gachagua over their suspected involvement in the June 2024 protests.

“The inquiry file was presented to the DPP for review and direction. Upon careful examination, the DPP has determined that there is sufficient evidence to charge the suspects with conspiracy to commit a felony,” part of a letter from the DPP read.

However, a High Court judge barred security agencies from detaining Gachagua’s allies, directing that the case would be mentioned on October 15, 2024.
