Reactions to Religious Organisations Bill 2024

A bill sponsored by Tana River senator Danson Mungatana is expected to draw mixed reactions from religious quarters, with a section of Christian denominations stating their views must be considered.

The bill proposes a raft of measures to curb extremism and regulate the country’s religious environment, including introducing taxation and developing a curriculum for evangelists.

While Mungatana insists the bill seeks to prevent occurrences such as the Shakahola massacre which led to the deaths of over 400 people, a section of religious organisations believe the government would only serve to interfere in the affairs of the church if the bill sails through.

Eyes on UNGA 79th session

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) high-level discussions are set to enter the second day. As the organisation’s main decision-making body, the debates are expected to centre around climate change, which is the overriding theme in this year’s meeting.

The discussions planned to run through Saturday, September 28, 2024, will also involve the approval of the organisation’s budget and deliberate on emerging issues including security and industrialisation in developing countries.

President William Ruto has been holding a series of meetings with world leaders and international organisations to strengthen Kenya’s partnerships and explore opportunities for collaboration in trade, investment, and diplomacy.
