Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi has criticised the endless politicking that has been witnessed in the country over the past years.

Taking to his official X account on Monday, September 23, 2024, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker stated that Kenya as a country has never governed itself since independence due to politicking.

According to Amisi, the country has been dangerously politicking using tribal cards as key ingredients.

“Looking at Kenya since independence, you realise that we have never actually governed ourselves. Instead, we have been politicking, with tribal hegemony as our key ingredients,” Amisi stated.

The lawmaker went ahead to state that the country has been in campaign mode since the beginning of the 2022 General Elections.

He cited the events that proceeded the 2022 elections, among them the several protests in between, as some of the events that have dragged the country backwards.

Amisi expressed concerns that the cycle is likely to repeat after the 2027 General Elections since the political players will likely be the same.

The MP also singled out the politicking surrounding Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s impeachment.

Amisi on economy

According to Amisi, Kenya’s economy might have been better than South Africa’s if the colonialists had stayed for a little longer.

“Look now from 2022 election campaigns, to “Uhuru left coffer empty “campaign, to anti #Raila campaign, sufuria Azimio demonstrations, #GenZ revolt and now #Gachagua impeachment campaign until 2027 and the cycle repeats probably with the same players. We need to stop politicking and run a country. Maybe, just maybe, the white man should have stayed longer with our economy as we politic, we could be far more than South Africa,” Amisi said.

Gachagua’s woes

DP Gachagua is facing growing isolation amid an alleged impeachment motion, which has served to further alienate him in government and has somewhat resorted to fighting back by endearing himself to the voters through public rallies.

Recently, 48 Members of Parliament (MPs) drawn from the Mt Kenya region and its ‘diaspora’ denounced him and endorsed Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki as their leader.

The lawmakers on September 12, 2024, expressed frustration over the lack of a clear focal point to channel their developmental concerns and priorities to the national government.

The caucus declared Kindiki as its link with President William Ruto’s administration in an apparent coup against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who has been working to consolidate the region behind him.

On Monday, September 23, 2024, Tana River senator Danson Mungatana filed a censure motion against Gachagua, which has been largely criticised by among others, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry Aden Duale.
