The Ministry of Education has admitted that it may not meet the 100 per cent transition to secondary, as well as feed pupils in primary, schools because of budgetary constraints.

Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha and his Principal Secretary Dr. Belio Kipsang told MPs lack of funds may not allow full implementation of the two projects President Uhuru Kenyatta wants to be part of his  legacy.

The duo told a House Education committee disclosed that the ministry faces a deficit of Sh1.13 billion to implement  the school feeding programme through the cash transfer system and central procurement of foodstuff.

The ministry also requires a further Sh7.8 billion to implement the 100 per cent transition through the  Free Day Secondary education.

“The Exchequer has retained the same money they gave us in the 2019/20 financial year of Sh59.4 billion yet we are on the 100 per cent transition. We do not have adequate resources to give to our schools,” said Kipsang.
