US ambassador to Kenya Meg Whitman has praised the country’s constitution and championed for its full enforcement.

Speaking during a live interview with a local TV station, Whitman who was responding to remarks on President William Ruto’s frequent disregard of the constitution when implementing his projects, noted that Kenya has an excellent constitution which needs to be enforced with utmost transparency as part of everyday life.

She also voiced America’s support for Ruto’s administration saying the country supports a democratically elected president of the country.

“We do support a democratically elected president of your country, here’s the great thing about democracy, the country gets to make another decision if they want to in 2027. I can’t speak back to 2010, I was not here at the time but what I will say is that Kenya’s constitution is excellent and the country needs to enforce it and ensure that everything in there is brought to light and is part of everyday life; Kenya has work to do there, and as I said every democracy is a work in progress, you have to keep working at a more perfect union,” she said.

Megan’s remarks which came as Kenya’s constitution marked it’s 14th anniversary come in the wake of criticism on Ruto’s failure to adhere to court orders on key amendments including the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) and the Finance Act, 2023, among others.
