Reactions to Governor Mwangaza’s impeachment
More reactions to the recent impeachment of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, are among the top news events that are likely to dominate headlines today.
Mwangaza has been impeached by the County Assembly for the third time in less than two years.
During the impeachment motion before the Meru County Assembly on Thursday afternoon, 49 out of the 67 MCAs voted in favour of her removal while 17 attempted to save her. Three absconded.
The MCAs voted to remove Mwangaza from office amid protests from her supporters a move that led to the deployment of a heavy security team around the Assembly premises and its environs for the better part of the day.
The motion tabled by deputy Majority leader Zipporah Kinya who had withdrawn a similar one she had presented on July 17, sailed through without much trouble.
Jimi Wanjigi’s home raid
Police officers on Thursday, August 8, 2024, pitched camp at the home of businessman and Safina Party Leader Jimmi Wanjigi in Muthaiga.
A vehicle was intercepted at the game of Wanjigi’s home and after the police conducted a search, they recovered assorted items among them tear gas canisters and a mobile phone.
The operation conducted by a multi-agency team saw the police tow the vehicle and urged Wanjigi to voluntarily surrender to the nearest police station.
However, the police were able to access Wanjigi’s main house after they made a return at night. They are said to have broken the main door and caused massive damage, according to Wanjigi’s lawyer Willis Otieno.
The police during the night raid moved from one room to the other searching for items. More developments on this incident are expected in the course of the day.
Power blackout
Kenya Power has announced a temporary blackout scheduled to affect three counties on Friday, August 9, 2024, citing routine network maintenance as the reason for the planned blackout.
The affected areas will include parts of Kakamega, Homa Bay, and Murang’a counties.
In the Western Region, specific areas in Kakamega County that will experience the blackout include Butere, Manyulia, Manyala Hospital, Masala, Maondo, and adjacent customers. The outage in this region is expected to last from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
In the South Nyanza Region, parts of Homa Bay County will also be without power. The affected areas include Kisaku, Tonga, Kiabuya, Magunga, Kogelo, Lwanda Gwassi, Nyatambe, Nyenga, NYS Lambwe, Sanjwero, Kigoto, and surrounding customers. This outage is set to occur from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm.
2024 Paris Olympic Games
Kenyan athletes will today be in action at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. In the men 800m semi-final, Emmanuel Wanyonyi and Wycliffe Kinyamal will be representing team Kenya on Friday.
In the women races, Beatrice Chebet will be in action competing in the 10000m final after bagging gold in the 5000m.
