Reactions to university funding applications
Education Ministry has extended the application for higher education funding to August 15, 2024, as 74,237 students have yet to apply for varsity funding.
In a letter dated August 5, 2024, the Higher Education and Research Principal Secretary Beatrice Inyagala said guardians will be informed of the cost of the university programmes starting from August 19.
“We are pleased to announce that the application process has been extended by ten days, closing on August 15, 2024. Under the New Funding Model, government funding will be allocated based on individual student needs. Starting August 19, 2024, parents and guardians will be informed of the university fees/household contribution towards the cost of university programmes,” Inyagala stated.
“Since then, the process of applying for scholarships and loans has been ongoing. As of August 4, 2024, a total of 79,038 university students had applied for both loans and scholarships but 74,237 university students are yet to apply for funding.”
Scheduled blackouts
Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has listed areas that will be affected by planned power outrage today.
According to a statement issued by KPLC on Monday, August 5, 2024, the planned blackout will affect five counties.
The temporary power interruption which will affect normal operation in the affected areas is part of network maintenance.

Counties to experience blackout
In Nakuru county, the power blackout will affect the whole of Njoro town, Karlo, Kenana Farm, Maili Tatu, Bamboo Farm, Hortec Farm, Chemsian Farm, Sian Roses, Kenyatta Sun Rise, Sitienei Farm, Part of Piave and adjacent customers from 9.00 am to 4.00 pm.
Similarly in Nyahururu county, the outage is set to affect Rumuruti, Kinamba, Olmoran, Kabel, Rumuruti, Muhotetu, Suguta, Marmar, Maralal Town and adjacent customers.
In Nyeri county, the 8.00 am to 5.00 pm blackout will be felt in parts of Kabebero, Kihuri, Kairuthi, Gathunguri TBC, Waihara, Thokoni TBC, Kihuri, Kabebero, Githimbai TBC, Karega TBC, Kiandemi, Kairuthi Health Center, Ngunyi TBC, Iriaini Mkt, Gathumbi Village, Kahigaini, Iriaini T/Fact, Thunguri Market and adjacent customers.
In Kiambu County, areas expected to experience power interruption include, Thindiga, Muhasibu, Thindigua, Kigwa Farm, Paradise Lost, Muhasibu, Kwaheri Rd, Fourways Junction, Bar Next Door and adjacent customers from 9.00 a.m. to 5.00 p.m.
In Kilifi County, the 9.00 am to 5.00 pm blackout will affect residents of Malindi Airport, Malindi High Sch, Mbaraka Chembe, Takaye, Kwa Chocha and adjacent customers.
