Embattled Dadaab Member of Parliament Farah Maalim has denied claims that he called for the “slaughtering of 5,000” Generation Z protestors who staged countrywide demonstrations over the controversial Finance Bill that has since been withdrawn.

Maalim, who has been under fire from various quarters over his controversial remarks, clarified that he would not make such statements as this does not reflect his position.

In a video uploaded on his social media Platform TikTok, Maalim said that he has over 30 years’ experience in politics, his track record is well known and thus would never make such remarks.

He said: “My position is, I never called for the death of anyone, I would never call for it, I have educated thousands of young Kenyans from every community of this country and they are all my children.”

And added: “I am a very honest person, who for over 30 years has been in the politics of this country. I am one person who has had a track record that is matched by very few people.”

Best interests

In the video, Maalim, said that he makes decisions based on his conscience which is always in the best interests of the country.
He however maintained that he is still popular and he will be elected again in 2027 when Kenyans go to the polls.

He said: “I have always been a Kenyan, what I did was I came in as an opposition MP in 1992 through Ford Kenya when everybody else in the region was in KANU. At this time the regime was Kanu and I stood my conscience and philosophy and this has never changed.”

He added: “When it comes to votes, I will go back to my constituency. Everybody knows my popularity on the ground. You don’t have somebody who has been here for 30 years who gets elected again now. But I am there and I will come back until I decide to retire.”

His sentiments come after an undated video in the Somali dialect which has since gone viral allegedly shows him saying that if he were the President of Kenya he would have “slaughtered” 5,000 young protesters every day.

“This was an attempted coup, a clear attempted coup. Children of wealthy business owners, wealthy parents and kids raised on ill-gotten wealth, 80 per cent from one tribe were dropped off in downtown and told to riot and take over State House and Parliament buildings,” he said.

“God forbid if I was president, I would have slaughtered 5,000 of them daily. Seriously, there is no two ways about it,” he said.
Video edited

Although he immediately clarified that the video was edited and did not represent his position, he received all manner of condemnation from leaders.

The latest condemnation on him happened at the weekend when he was ejected from Sarova Whitesands Beach Resort in Mombasa where he was staying after he checked him on Friday last week.

Sarovah Hotels and Resorts Kenya Managing Director Jimi Kariuki in an announcement after X users called out the resort for hosting Maalim said that the MP was no longer their guest as the hotel does not condone the controversial remarks.

Said Kariuki: “Good evening. He is no longer a guest at our hotel. We asked him to leave the hotel earlier in the day. We do not in any way condone his inflammatory and threatening statements against Kenyans and will not associate our brand with such a person.”

He was responding to an X user calling themselves @Ice_queen_001 who sought to know why they were hosting Maalim yet he said he would butcher protestors.

She said: “Excuse you @SarovaWhitesand. Asking me and many Kenyans, why are you hosting a man who openly said that he would willingly kill 5,000 peaceful protesters daily for simply exercising their constitutional right? “

And apart from Sarovah Hotels and Resorts his own party Wiper party that is headed by Kalonzo Musyoka also proposed that he be expelled from the party as well as the position of the Deputy Party leader. “NEC recommends expulsion from the Party to the National Delegates Convention (NDC) – the supreme organ of the party. NEC’s decision is that the Farah Maalim be de-whipped from all Committees in Parliament including the Speaker’s Panel,” said Wiper Party Secretary General Shakila Abdalla.
