Alara Girls Secondary School defeated Nyakach Girls 2-1 during the Nyanza Region Secondary School Games at Kisii School, Kisii County, securing a trophy and qualifying for the national games to be held in the area at the weekend.

Shakina Zachary and Getrude Amolo scored for Alara in the 46th and 86th minutes respectively, while Joy Achieng scored a penalty for Nyakach in the 86th minute.

Earlier, Alara (pictured) from Homa Bay County thrashed defending champions Lwak Girls 7-0 in the semifinals at the school under the scorching sun amid thousands of fans. Elvis Arigi, Alara’s coach, said he had prepared the players well and expected them to defeat Nyakach and qualify for the nationals.

“I identified the weaknesses in our opponents and used them to prepare my team. They were marking individual players, which contributed to our victory,” Arigi told People Sport after the match.

Meanwhile, Joseph Ongoro, Matutu PAG head coach, put the onus on Agoro Sare fans for attacking him and his players at Cardinal Otunga High School in Mosocho, terming it unfortunate.

He said the fans became rowdy in the 80th minute after Matutu scored 2-0 against Agoro Sare and realized they would lose, resorting to violence.

The coach and his players were injured and treated at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital before being discharged. Kelvin Isaboke, a coach from Riokindo Secondary School, was struck by a speeding vehicle and died.

“Agoro Sare never expected us to meet and play such a crucial match. I applied for a coaching job at the school but was not given one. I be[1]lieve we were attacked due to a grudge,” Ongoro explained, expressing his disappointment.

Having coached Gusii Football Club in the National Super League, Ongoro joined Matutu, condemning the fans’ attack on players, which disrupted the game.

Ongoro expects the match to be replayed as per the rules to complete the remaining time, or for the organizers to penalize the team for causing the game to be abandoned. He praised the school management for supporting the hardworking team, emphasizing that their dedication and sacrifice had borne fruit.
