Relegated Nzoia Sugar shock Ulinzi Stars in FKF PL round 32
Relegated Nzoia Sugar stunned Ulinzi Stars with a 3-1 victory in an FKF Premier League match played at Ulinzi Complex on Friday.
The match marked the return of the FKF Premier League after a long break to accommodate the international season.
Nzoia Sugar fate
Heading into the match, Nzoia Sugar’s relegation was already confirmed, but they aimed to exit the top tier honourably, having managed only four wins in the previous 31 league matches.
Ulinzi, on their part, had secured just one win in their last six matches and were 13th on the log.
Nzoia started impressively with captain Thomas Harun heading in a delivery from Osoro off a corner kick after 20 minutes of play.
In the 38th minute, David Simiyu calmly collected a sumptuous through ball from Victor Maliachi and looped it over Ulinzi keeper Michael Wanyika.
The visitors took a 2-0 lead into the break. In the second half, the hosts pulled one back as former Nzoia Sugar striker Hillary Simiyu returned to haunt his former employers.
Nzoia sealed their win as Ian Simiyu rolled the ball to Simiyu, who tapped it in for the final goal.
The league will continue with six matches scheduled for Saturday, with the spotlight on Raila Odinga Stadium where Shabana FC will host AFC Leopards.
Shabana will be keen to secure maximum points against Ingwe to keep their hopes of avoiding relegation alive.
AFC Leopards, after a strong run in 2024, are targeting a better finish and will be looking to bounce back from their matchday 31 loss to Bidco United.
Another crucial match will take place at Muhoroni Stadium where Muhoroni Youth, who are chasing survival, will play FC Talanta in a bid to pile pressure on Shabana.
Kenya Police Sacco will host a doubleheader, with the early kickoff featuring Nairobi City Stars against Kakamega Homeboyz at 1:00 p.m.
The late kickoff will see KCB Football Club take on Posta Rangers in a match that will be broadcast live.
Double header
Machakos Stadium will also host a doubleheader. Tusker will face Bandari FC in the early kickoff, while Bidco United will play Kariobangi Sharks in the later kickoff set for 4:00 p.m.
On Sunday, Murang’a Seal will host Kenya Police at St Sebastian Grounds in Murang’a. Another match will see Sofapaka tackle champions Gor Mahia FC.
Gor Mahia, having already secured the league title, will be looking to finish on a high note, while Sofapaka are pushing for a rise in the standings to avoid dropping into the relegation race.
