Uasin Gishu County has renamed one of its hospitals after First Lady Rachel Ruto.

The health facility previously known as the West Maternity Hospital was renamed to Mama Rachel Ruto Maternity Hospital in a ceremony attended by the First Lady.

During the Tuesday, June 11, 2024, inauguration of the facility, Health Principal Secretary of the State Department for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni said the facility will go a long way in ensuring that all mothers and children have access to high-quality, essential health services.

“This establishment will greatly enhance maternal and child health in Uasin Gishu County and the broader Rift Valley region, providing comprehensive care from family planning to postnatal services,” Muthoni said.

The PS added that the facility represents a crucial step towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and fortifying primary healthcare.

Uasin Gishu Governor Jonathan Bii noted that the County was grateful to the First Lady for accepting the hospital to be named after her.

“Today’s official opening of the Mama Rachel Ruto Maternity Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility with a 70-bed capacity, is a significant milestone for the women and children of our county,” Bii stated.

During the event, Uasin Gishu County also launched drone technology to bolster the distribution of emergency drugs to health facilities across the county.

“This technological advancement will revolutionize healthcare delivery by providing rapid and efficient transportation of essential medical supplies, samples, and test results,” Bii said.

The inauguration came after the County received a huge consignment of medical drugs worth Ksh37 million for its hospitals.

The drugs from the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) were flagged off on Monday, June 10, 2024, by the governor to the 138 health facilities spread throughout the county.

“We have received assorted drugs worth Ksh37 million, and they will go straight to our health facilities. This move is critical in enhancing the health of our residents,” the governor said.

Bii also added that the consignment would go directly to the health facilities, bypassing a holding unit from where the drugs would be stored before being assigned to the various hospitals in the county.
