Lawyer Ahmednassir Abdullahi has criticized a statement released by Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, Kithure Kindiki, on ethnic mobilization, calling it a cheap shot.

On Madaraka Day, Kindiki issued a statement condemning the mobilization and incitement of ethnic communities against each other, describing it as a barbaric, cruel, and dangerous political misadventure that threatens the future of the country.

Kindiki on 2007

He urged Kenyans to remember the violent ethnic clashes of December 2007 and January 2008, and to resist, name, and shame the propagators of ethnic hate and the divisive “us versus them” narrative.

Many interpreted Kindiki’s statement as a veiled critique of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who has been advocating for the “one man, one shilling” agenda and previously remarked that those who voted for the UDA government are “shareholders” who should be prioritized.

Ahmednasir acknowledged the historical relevance of Kindiki’s statement but argued that it is currently irrelevant.

He asserted that the country is at peace and accused Kindiki of taking a cheap shot at the Deputy President.

“Cheap shot Bwana CS! Historically very relevant. Currently irrelevant. CS knows Kenya is peaceful but is obviously taking a very cheap shot at DP Rigathi Gachagua (I had to check the timeline for this tweet. I thought it was a decade old just to realize it was yesterday’s),” Ahmednasir said in a statement.

Kindiki, Waiguru

Kindiki’s statement was also supported by Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru, who stressed that as a leader from the Mount Kenya region, she will not partake in nor condone ethnic politics.

In her statement shared via her official X account, Waiguru stated that she would not allow her people from the vote-rich region to be misled into separating themselves from the rest of the nation.

She emphasized that the region calls for a unified nation to bring development to the people.
