Kenya 7s, known as Shujaa, are scheduled to play a decisive World Sevens Series qualifier match against Germany on Sunday at 6:20 p.m. in Madrid.

This high-stakes encounter is a “winner takes all” match, with both teams fighting for a coveted spot in the World Sevens Series.

To reach this stage, Shujaa finished second in the Challenger Series and secured second place in their group stage with seven points.

Their journey to this crucial match saw them deliver a strong performance in the HSBC 7s playoffs pool, culminating in a decisive 36-7 victory over Chile in their final pool match in Madrid.

Kenya’s campaign in the tournament had its ups and downs. They started with a mixed bag of results, securing a win against Samoa but suffering a loss to Spain.

However, their determination to end on a high note was evident as they entered their next match with renewed vigor.

John Okoth was instrumental in Kenya’s strong start, showcasing his speed and skill by breaking through the defense to score in the left corner, giving Kenya a 5-0 lead after a missed conversion.

Okoth continued his impressive performance, scoring another try in the same spot despite immense pressure, which required a review by the TMO before awarding the try.

Chile responded with a converted try from Cristobal Game, narrowing the gap. However, in the closing minutes of the first half, Kenya displayed excellent teamwork.

Okoth made another strong carry, leading to the ball being passed to the right. Tony Omondi’s well-timed offload found Chrissant Ojwang, who powered over the line under the posts for a converted try, extending Kenya’s lead.

Kenya 7s spirit

Despite Patrick Odongo limping off during the match, the Kenyan spirits remained high. Samuel Asati had a cheeky run off the scrum to score the fourth try under the posts.

With their focus now on the crucial qualifier against Germany, Shujaa are determined to secure their place in the World Sevens Series. This match will be a defining moment for the team.
