Kenyan tennis trailblazer Angela Okutoyi has risen 20 places in the just released Women Tennis Association rankings.

The rise in rankings follows Okutoyi’s heroics at the concluded W15 Monastir doubles in Tunisia where she collected the maximum points (15) on offer.

Okutoyi eyeing Paris Olympics

Okutoyi who is on 109 points needs to get on the top 400 in the rankings if she’s to stand a chance at qualifying for the Olympics. She now needs 47 or more points from her next two assignments to close the gap.

The Africa Games Champion gets back to action in the W35 La Marsa slated for May 27 to June 2 and the W50 La Marsa slated for June 3-9 in women’s singles action with a total of 85 points on offer.

The 20-year-old’s W15 Monastir success is symbolic as it was the first professional title she ever scooped back in July 2023, making her the first-ever Kenyan woman to win a singles pro tennis tournament.

Paired with 19-year-old Egyptian Merna Refaat, they upset top seeds Zeel Desai of India and Daria Khomutsianskaya of Belarus 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals before defeating a Chinese duo of J. Xu and L. Liu 6-2, 6-2 in the finals.

Okutoyi’s professional schedule has been restricted due to her college obligations, with only 10 tournaments since last July. The 2022 Wimbledon girls’ doubles winner continued to create history by winning the singles gold medal at the African Games in Accra in March.
