President Ruto in US

Eyes will be on President William Ruto and his engagement in the United States.

Ruto is in the US for a five-day state visit and is expected to engage different people on different forums across those five days.

On Tuesday, May 21, 2024, the president will start his tour in Atlanta, Georgia, where he will visit the Carter Presidential Library and Museum. The visit is a sign that the two countries share a commitment to governance, democratic values, and anti-corruption efforts.

A visit to the Ebenezer Baptist Church to pay homage to the civil rights struggle will then follow. The visit is to emphasize how religion can be a force for good, underscoring respect for historical struggles for equality and justice.

Ruto will also visit Spelman College to discuss the critical role of higher education, particularly science and technology, in enhancing Kenya’s human capital development.

A tour to Tyler Perry Studios, where he will explore opportunities within the creative economy as a potential job creator, is also lined up before a visit to Coca-Cola, where new investment partnerships will be announced before launching Vivo’s inaugural store in America.

His high-level engagement will be at Capitol Hill, where he’ll meet a bipartisan congressional delegation under the chairmanship of the Speaker of the House, meet with the Black Congressional Caucus, and hold discussions with the bipartisan caucus of the Senate.

Met warning

Following a warning by Kenya Meteorological Services Director David Gikungu of continuous rain, more attention is set to be placed on flood-prone areas.

The floods have already caused loss of life and destruction of property, and the weatherman warns of continued rains, especially in the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the Highlands West and East of the Rift Valley, and Nairobi.

At least 200 people have been killed during the catastrophic weather pattern, over 3,000 households have been displaced, and more than 1,000 schools have experienced infrastructural damages.
