Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has revisited his career and pointed out what are the outstanding and low moments.

Wanyama is one of the most high-profile footballers Kenya has ever produced as he has graced different leagues across Europe in Belgium, Scotland and England.

His career was elevated even more when he signed for Tottenham Hotspur from Southampton in 2016 and was part of a hugely talented squad under Mauricio Pochettino, currently at Chelsea.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Hugo Lloris and Son Heungmin, Spurs finished as Premier League runners-up in 2017 and reached the Champions League final two years later, which they lost to Liverpool.

Wanyama’s regret

Failing to win the Premier League is, Wanyama reveals, his greatest regret.

“My only regret from that era is that we did not win a big trophy. We had everything to do it, but just couldn’t pull it off. We had a great team and a great coach in Mauricio.

“We showed we could beat anyone. I remember one season (2016/17), we didn’t lose one home game. That’s how good our team was,” Wanyama told FIFA.com.

Wanayama holds Kane’s name high and the duo had an emotional combined effort when Spurs defeated Manchester United in their last game at White Hart Lane.

Wanyama powered home a header in a 2-1 win over the Red Devils with Kane scoring the other.

“Harry’s finishing is second to no one. You saw it in training, he is so clinical. I have not seen another striker like him. He’s also a very professional player. He does all the right things. His game understanding, his movements, his runs – they are just top,” he revealed.

Although Tottenham Hotspur represents his career high level, a goal against Barcelona in a Champions League match for Celtic is Wanayama’s most memorable moment.

“My highlight would have to be when we beat the mighty Barcelona at Celtic Park and I scored. I will never forget that night. That was one of the best atmospheres I have ever played in.

“We won 2-1 and Messi scored for Barca. They were an incredible team and it was a dream to even play against them, never mind to win and score a goal,” he added.

Currently, Wanyama, who has so far retired from international football, plays for Montreal CF, a Canadian outfit in the Major Soccer League.

His current focus is to help Montreal reach MLS Cup play-offs and in future, the Kenyan midfielder says he is likely to become a tactician.

“I think I will do that, yes [become a coach]. I’ve worked with some great coaches. I look at how they see the game and I’ve tried to take in everything.

“I believe one day I could be a good manager. My motivation is always to learn new things. Football is a game of learning – nobody knows it all. Whatever I do in football, I just always want to be the best I can be,” the Muthurwa-born star, said.
