Police in Nyahururu yesterday said employees of a second-hand clothes dealer will be charged in connection with the death of a 17-year-old boy after he was assaulted by the workers.

Nyahururu Sub County Police Commander, Jackline Gacheri, confirmed that all the employees of Seven-Sunday second-hand clothes shop located on Koinange Street in Nyahururu town were arrested last Sunday after the boy identified as Stephen Njuguna died from injuries inflicted by the employees.

The boy is alleged to have shop-lifted an item worth Sh500.

The boy’s father, James Muraya speaking at their Kisima home in Gatimu ward Nyandarua County said he received a call from the owner of the shop informing him that his son was being held in one of the rooms in the shop.

Stolen a cloth

“I sent my wife there and she was told that the boy had stolen a cloth worth Sh500 and the rules demand that they should pay 10 times the amount which is Sh5000.

“The mother demanded to see her son first and the boy complained of pain and she was told by the employees that the boy had been beaten,” said Muraya.

The father said when the son arrived home his condition deteriorated and he was rushed to Nyahururu County Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The incident enlisted demonstration by traders from the Nyahururu market led by Samuel Wandeto who condemned the incident, saying it is not the first time people had been assaulted at the shop.
