Passports collections

The government has dedicated this week to passport delivery. From Monday, May 13 to 18, the government will use the period to fast-track passport delivery in all passport application centres across the country.

The centres include Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Eldoret, Embu, Nakuru, Kisii, and Kericho. Applicants who have received notification that their passports are ready for collection are advised to take advantage of the exercise.

This comes after the department remained open on Saturday, May 11, to allow Kenyans to collect their passports.

Addressing the issue of passports, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki said the government has put in place measures for the speedy collection and delivery of the final batch of 45,000 passports which are now ready.

The batch is from the over 720,000 passports whose production had been delayed. Kindiki said systems are now aligned after the acquisition of two new printers for the personalization of passport details.

Schools reopening

After 14 days of waiting, schools will finally open paving the way for the second-term activities. Nine days ago, President William Ruto in his Nation Address said the school’s opening date had been deferred.

The government later announced the opening day as Monday, May 13. Ruto requested MPs to re-organize their CDF allocations to prioritize the reconstruction of school infrastructure that floods have damaged.

School opening dates were postponed after floods wreaked havoc in the country, causing deaths, destruction of properties, and displacement of persons.

Government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura said on Saturday the floods have also displaced 24,196 households comprising 131,450 people.

On Sunday, the Kenya Meteorological Department warned Kenyans that the heavy rainfall will continue in several parts of the country.

NTSA crackdown

Over the weekend, Cabinet Secretary for Roads, Transport, and Public Works, Kipchumba Murkomen announced plans to intensify inspections on the roads as schools reopen for the second term on Monday.

Murkomen disclosed that starting Monday, thorough inspections will be conducted to ensure vehicles adhere to safety standards.

He revealed the need to be vigilant for unroadworthy vehicles that may be pressed into service to accommodate the high number of students travelling this week.
