A section of leaders from Ukambani have invited the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) to probe remarks by Kitui governor Charity Ngilu over alleged incitement.

In statement, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua and Kitui Central MP Makali Mulu accused the governor of inciting the crowd against Gatundu South legislator Moses Kuria at the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) meeting  in Kitui last Saturday.

“The NCIC has said it will deploy its officers to BBI rallies across the country to monitor and record utterances by merchants of hate speech.

We are watching with more than passing interest to see what action the commission will take against Ngilu as a way of sending a message to leaders hiding behind the BBI to divide the country for selfish political gains,” they said.

The leaders warned that the utterances by Ngilu risks inciting communities to tribal skirmishes, noting that similar remarks she made last year led to the torching of a truck belonging to a businessman from Kiambu.

Personal remarks

“We want the public to know that Ngilu did not act for or on behalf of the people of Kitui County, Makueni or Machakos counties.

Her remarks were personal and she must be held personally responsible for her own unfortunate utterances,” Wambua, who read the statement Parliament Buildings yesterday.

The leaders also claimed Sh12 million was given for Kitui rally but the cash cannot be accounted for. The leaders at the same apologised to Kuria for the way he was treated during the rally.

Meanwhile, members of the Kitui Professionals Organisation also castigated Ngilu for instigating the ejection of two legislators from rally in Kitui Town. Led by Mwingi-based lobby coordinator Campbell Munyambu, the professionals asked Ngilu who is coordinating the initiative forums in Ukambani to respect other leaders and work as team for the exercise to succeed. He was addressing the press in Kitui yesterday.

Ngilu ordered the ejection of Kuria, who with Senate Majority leader Kipchumba Murkomen, for allegedly insulting President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi has warned that no politician will set foot in Meru if he or she tries to insult the president. Making the remarks at Kangeta in Igembe Central, the county boss said he will not soften anymore and watch ill-motivated politicians undermine Uhuru’s effort to unite Kenyans.
